Trained as an architect and landscape architect, I have spent most of my life focused on observing, studying, and designing the built and natural environments that surround us. Through this process I have developed drawing and painting skills crafted to these professions. Within the past few years I started to develop and evolve these skills into an art. For me this process requires a balance between expressing what I consciously see and experience, with what I instinctively sense and imagine. These two qualities are revealed in my paintings through the literal use of existing details and forms, but expressing them in an atmosphere, composition, and gestural quality that make the paintings completely unique.
While most of the paintings are grounded in realism, many of the elements and details within them are from various scenes that have been combined and layered to create a richer, more compelling composition. Often, I use a bold palette of pure colors to position the lighting to be as dramatic as possible. This allows the overall mood of the painting, while still believable', to have a surreal atmosphere, heightening the drama and interest of the scene.
