about the artist

Lisa Tang Liu is most known for her vivacious, colorful digital photography series Cowboys, but at times she returns to practicing the classic, quiet art of black and white film and darkroom printing for therapy. It is the yin (as in yin-yang) of her art portfolio.

On the black and whites:
Liu's black and white photographs are meditations on the rural, the overgrown, and the overlooked. Some of the photos feature an object overcome by nature - an abandoned armchair amongst gnarly trees, a fence covered in vines - while others feature a more ordered environment. Man-made objects compete with nature, and then succumb to it.

Lisa Tang Liu studied at Wellesley College, Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, Japan and the New England School of Photography in Boston. She currently lives in Quincy, Massachusetts.
