Some people get lost in thoughts of hidden life while looking across the ocean; others get lost in the nearly formless view. Both experiences are acknowledged in Fish Out of Water. Presenting literal and abstract studies of nature, the show features gyotaku fish rubbings on rice paper by Stephanie Mason, encaustic paintings by Linda Cordner, and a new selection of aquatically-themed Jobi Pottery.

Stephanie Mason graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in textile design. After working as a fabric designer for many years, she moved to Gloucester and focused her imagination on the ocean. Today she is a master of Japanese folk art known as gyotaku, a form of mono-printmaking that involves the use of watercolor to paint and rub the form of actual fish onto rice paper. Using specimens of octopi, bass and cuttlefish supplied by her fisherman neighbors, Mason creates one-of-a-kind underwater worlds that flash with movement and color.

Linda Cordner is considered one of the finest encaustic artists in the Boston area. Using modern techniques and some that are 2,000 years old, Cordner has created a body of wax-based work that is particularly noted for its brilliant color schemes, textures and sense of depth. Her works at 13FOREST evoke feelings of the ocean, landscapes and worlds that are somehow solemn but charged with luminescent energy. Cordner has studied in London and holds a BFA in graphic design and painting from the University of Connecticut.

Jobi Pottery is a Cape Cod cottage industry that began in 1953 by original owners Joe Colliano and Bill Hastings. Today, owner/designer Susan Kurtzman still uses the original mid-century casting molds to create Jobi Pottery by hand in her Truro studio. In the Boston area, Jobi is available only through 13FOREST. On Wednesday, June 1 from 7-9 pm, Kurtzman will be at the gallery to talk about the pottery and its history, and to demonstrate how it is made.
